Can You See the Illusion?

Posted by hts | December 25, 2007 .

Here you go (may be obvious, but the way those sub-images are arranged create a great illusion)

There are a lot of illusions online and this has to be one of the best ones I have seen so far.

  2. hts December 29, 2007 1:34 pm

Thanks for your kind words :)

  3. really nice December 30, 2007 1:52 am

this is really really cool. were the smaller pictures ones you found or were they made specifically for this piece?

  4. hts December 30, 2007 11:38 am

    First, Thanks for dropping by.
Then: I found the picture as it is. However, I might make a wild guess that the small pieces were made specifically for the big image. It would be really hard, methinks, to use some already existent pictures and to assemble in such way that they create such a powerful illusion.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with everyone my findings.

  5. Jim January 1, 2008 3:52 am

Is this supposed to be impressive? I’ve seen better work done by retarded children. Pretty damn pathetic.

  6. Josh January 1, 2008 8:19 am

lol come on Jim you wish you had that much creativity… don’t waste time in such stupid words.

man that image is awesome… don’t know how did u came up with that but it’s a pretty good job

  7. Avatar January 1, 2008 11:32 am

What the f–k is everyone dribbling on about?

This isn’t ‘awesome’ or ‘really really cool’ - it’s sub-standard crap. There are literally thousands of far better examples of this all over the web.

And it’s not an ‘illusion’ - go and look up the meaning of the word.

    Whoever stumbled this needs shooting.

  8. liz January 1, 2008 1:24 pm

did i miss something or is it just a face? just wondering

  9. hts January 1, 2008 4:14 pm

For Liz: obviously, it’s a face, but if you take a closer look, you’ll see the bigger picture is composed by several smaller pictures. That’s the whole point of the image, and that’s why I like it: the way the smaller image is assembled is just ..great :)

For Avatar: first of all, use proper words please. I personally am not insulted, but maybe there are people who are. Then: maybe it’s not an illusion in the proper, dictionary sense of the word, and obviously, there are better illusions on the web. I haven’t claimed it’s the best - it’s just a good one (in my opinion, of course)

For Jim: I’m not really sure retarded children might be able to draw such things - not even one of the “sub-pictures” - or maybe you miss the whole point of the picture? First, see about you before judging one’s mental capabilities.

    Anyway, thanks everyone for commenting.

  10. Avatar January 1, 2008 4:56 pm

hts: all the words I used are ‘proper’ words - check the dictionary.

And if anyone is insulted by anything I wrote, then they shouldn’t be using the internet without close supervision.

And it’s still a shit stumble.

  11. hts January 1, 2008 5:02 pm

The word that might disturb some of my audience is the one I censored in your comment (f00k). Again, I am ok with such language, I too use it daily, but it might offend some people - and I do not want this.

I second you, somewhat, in what you say: if you use the internet, it is true that you might be exposed to content that can conflict your education, beliefs etc.

Anyway, lets just use a “clean” language, shall we? And I’ll do my best to cleanse any comment that I feel “offending” - for me or my audience.

As for the “shit stumble”: it is your opinion, you told it to the world by commenting on my blog - I won’t deny your freedom of speech. Everyone has the right to have an opinion, eh? :)

  12. Niura January 2, 2008 12:42 am

I realy like your work. Please keep them coming!

  13. hts January 2, 2008 3:03 am

Thanks for your words, Niura! Comments such as yours keep me motivated to write on this blog! Subscribe to my RSS feed to receive updates as they are posted.

  14. steph January 2, 2008 4:53 am

I dont know about illusion, or cool, or really cool. But its a pretty picture and i do see the big face made up of little faces. I wonder where i could get it as a poster.

  15. FMDC January 2, 2008 11:03 pm

That’s cool. I think it is actually a great example of creativity.

I don’t think Avatar or Jim even like art. I think they’re a couple of sadists or something. It’s too bad you can’t just get rid of their comments.

  16. Josh January 3, 2008 5:17 am

ok Avatar let us all see ur magnificent and incredibly superior work of art and THEN u can give ur opinion WITHOUT disdaining anyone’s effort.

I’m fcking sick of u ease up man.

  17. wade January 3, 2008 9:27 am

i love all the different cultures in the subpictures. this is indeed a fine piece of work.

  18. hts January 3, 2008 11:57 am

First, thank you guys for your comments.

2nd, @FMDC: I can get rid of their comments, by deleting them, but I don’t want to - as I said above everyone has the right to say their opinion. I only reacted when they used foul words in their comments - words which I thought might disturb some of my readers.

  19. Avatar January 4, 2008 1:05 am

Josh - you seem to have anger management issues. Rather than deal with me in a pleasant manner (like hts) you think that your words have actual bite. Clearly mine do!

PROTIP: Take your head for a sh!t and try to make some friends in the real world day, there’s a good boy.

Cheers hts - the picture is growing on me. Slightly.

  20. hts January 4, 2008 2:12 am

haha :)..thank you, avatar. Anyway, I always thought a liberal-peaceful approach is the best solution for almost any problem

  21. Josh January 4, 2008 3:14 am

avatar: I don’t have such issue but thx 4 concearning (…)

what i cannot tolerate is people how disdain another’s effort unnecesarily like u did. truth be told, such things as the shooting comment or calling crap the image could have been saved 4 yourself. looks like hts’s fine with that but honestly I’m not.

  22. hts January 4, 2008 12:29 pm

I’m going to say it yet again: I’ll always let everyone express their thoughts about what I write, as long as they keep a “clean” language. I am ok with negative comments, as well - feedback is good, no matter what kind. It grows the desire of improving ;)

  23. Dude January 6, 2008 8:20 am

It is well made. It’s not amazing or the coolest thing ever made.

Did you people not live though the 90’s? Don’t you remember the photomosaic craze?!?!

Heck, you can now make your own with free software.
    See Here: http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/metapixel/

For better examples. Look at practically any painting Salvador Dali.

  24. hts January 6, 2008 12:54 pm

Thanks for letting us know about that software. I, personally wasn’t aware of the existence of that application. Good one. Thanks for sharing.

  25. Celice January 6, 2008 11:33 pm

Well, I liked it. It isn’t the coolest thing I’ve ever seen or anything, but it’s certainly cool, more than a bit clever and far from the worst Stumble I’ve ever stumbled, lol.

I think one or two of the people who stumbled here and felt obliged to leave nasty comments take the internets perhaps a leetle too seriously?

  26. sharon January 7, 2008 12:41 am

    Nice job!

  27. PJ January 7, 2008 10:59 pm

I think the image is beautiful. Everyone’s idea of what holds beauty is different. I applaud anyone who steps up and wants to share what they find interesting with others. It’s true alot of people won’t like it but you don’t have to be rude to that person who took the chance to show somebody.
You shouldn’t be “mad” at that person- did their image stir up a bad memory? If so, don’t look at it! I am sure there will be one day that you are in that persons place taking a chance to show the world what you believe holds beauty.
I think the above image is very interesting and I believe it holds beauty to quite a few, even the artist who made it!

  28. hts January 8, 2008 12:02 am

PJ, thanks for taking the time to write such an comprehensive comment :)

That’s what I think, too - and that’s why I posted this image. I just found it somewhere on the internet and wanted to share it with everyone. If you like it, let me know. If you don’t like it, do the same, but don’t be rude to me or to other people who are reading what you have to say.

  29. Perplexed January 8, 2008 11:29 am

I am truly perplexed. I stumble upon a great picture (or at least a picture more interesting than most other pictures I see), and it is followed by a number of angry comments (from “Jim” and “Avatar”). This is interesting. Have we, as a society, become this angry? If a harmless picture triggers this much anger in you, how do you get through life? And what is the source of this resentment and rage? Is it just an inferiority complex, or is it too many video games?
These questions should lead to some self-reflection, although they might make you angry, of course…

  30. pjos January 8, 2008 11:54 pm

    I’ve got to agree
no matter whether you think the picture is cool or not (which i think it is) if you are that angered by finding a site that doesn’t thrill you, you need help.

And btw, hts, you must be a saint to be so calm with such angry idiots in the world

  31. RichardS January 9, 2008 6:46 am

I think it is a delight,
especially because the large composite portrait is a dead ringer for Michelangelo’s head of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

  32. hts January 9, 2008 1:25 pm

“Perplexed”, pjos, RichardS - thank you for your comments. I really appreciate your words.

As I said before, everyone can have their own opinion about the picture I posted - bad or good. I’ll take any kind of opinions, as long as they are backed by a good argument (well, theirs aren’t, but anyway :) ).

I don’t mind people not liking my blog/post/writings/whatever - I’m just glad that there are people who read what I have to say - and that’s that :D

  33. dfdsg January 10, 2008 2:05 am

    it is crash

  34. Cole Kerr January 10, 2008 5:27 am

I think the picture was very beautiful, its a shame that people like Jim (wtf is a sub-picture) can’t even sound logical when they make critique, like Avatar.

  35. Just an idea January 10, 2008 6:08 am

Uh .. that is an idea !

Create a new account to criticize your own work in an aggressive way so that other people take your defence (with a biased point of view).

Not saying that you did that “hts”. It is just the situation that makes me thinks about that.

Will try to keep that in mind … might be useful one day (just joking … or maybe not)

    Btw, nice pic.

  36. hts January 10, 2008 7:07 am

No, I really didn’t do that. If this is what you believe, contact me on htsrzvn at gmail.com, and I’ll send you a screenshot of the comments page for this item, so that you’ll see that each comment has a different IP, email address etc.

Of course, you’re not directly saying it - just in a more subtle way :)

  37. JTorch January 10, 2008 7:32 am

Someone mentioned that this is like the photomosaic craze from the 90’s, but the majority of those photomosaics were simply images slightly tinted to certain colours in order to suit the larger image. Basically, every picture acted as a pixel. In this case, however, the colours AND the lines of each separate image make the larger image without being distorted in any way. Each smaller image can also stand alone. That’s why it’s awesome.

  38. Just an idea January 10, 2008 7:34 am

    No really.

I was not trying to say that you cheated.
I just found interesting to point out that others were more kind to you because you had been attacked. It is just an interesting example of a trend of human society.

Well, I am not a native English speaker, so it is kind of hard to make you understand what I truly wanted to say, because some words I use are approximate, but you can still get the main idea.

We can make kind of a parallel with your pic : what you see is not always what you should see. Just to make people think about that ;)

(Btw, different IP and email addresses does not prove anything. You can easily cheat on that.)

    Sincerly,

    Someone.

  39. hts January 10, 2008 2:12 pm

I know a new email address can be created in few minutes (or better, use a disposable one) and that the IP can also be spoofed - but do you really think I’d do this to get some comments on one of my posts ? :) It would sincerely be a waste of time. Besides, I would be practically cheating myself - a blog has to grow naturally, with time, not being artificially inflated by my own comments or fake numbers, etc.

PS: your english is OK - I understood what you said (I am not a native speaker, either).

  40. Just an idea January 10, 2008 2:28 pm

    Well, apparently you did not.

There was no point to justify once again.

    Oh well … nevermind.

  41. jess January 10, 2008 7:29 pm

This is an amazing illusion. I am so impressed that you managed to find pictures that were so perfect for the image! It’s not just a man, it’s Adam from the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, am I right? Truly beautiful. :)

  42. Christi January 13, 2008 2:18 am

I think it’s pretty neat. HTS - did you make this yourself? I think it’s impressive. I like how there are so many different cultures represented.

  43. Jack Alexander January 13, 2008 7:34 am

I have one far superior to this. It’s a picture of the president pixelated from photographs of rectums.

  44. Dan Byers January 13, 2008 8:34 am

‘hts’ you are obviously slightly psychotic to think that the small control you exert over your insignificant little blog actually means anything. don’t bother replying to this, I will never visit this page again in order to feed your Napoleonic sense of self importance. Blogging after all is just a form of public mental masturbation. Thanks for preserving my free speech though, I am forever in debt to you.

  45. hts January 13, 2008 12:29 pm

Christi: no, I am not the author of the picture. I really don’t know who this is, otherwise I would have credited him. I merely found it. But thanks for commenting and asking.

    Jack: what president?

Dan: insignificant little blog, but heck it’s mine. At least I exert power over something, be it insignificant or not, and try to grow it into something bigger, better, more popular, and so on - unlike you, who’s got…nothing :)
As for the Napoleonic sense of self importance: yes, for me this blog, among other projects I’ve developed and currently own/run, makes me believe and feel that I am important - for myself, and for others. It’s some kind of self-esteem here - but when you are a lamer who throws dirt on someone else’s work, just like you did, you can’t even mention “foreign” notions like self-esteem.
    Have a nice day.

  47. Slip January 13, 2008 6:53 pm

Just to say something. If avatar named himself off that horrible american anime that comes on nickelodeon. He really needs to check whats bullshit and what ain’t.

  48. Rob January 13, 2008 8:49 pm

Fantastic work! I really enjoy how you used most every emotion to create such an image.
    Truly astounding!
    Thank you!

  49. Ryan January 14, 2008 10:22 am

What I find odd is that in most of these comments people talk latch onto a topic not really pertaining to the art/form itself. If you look, the picture is in fact the head of “Adam” from the Sistine Chapel as mentioned by someone above. The head is also comprised of many of the different nationalities/races of the world. It speaks of a theological idea that we are in fact all connected one way or another. Whether you view that idea through the scientific evolution theory or the theory of Adam & Eve, it holds true in reality. The art itself isn’t amazing but it is deep in its own way. Well done.

  50. Carlos January 14, 2008 6:35 pm

To top everything said here, specially by Ryan, this is not a computer design image. It’s a mural by mural artist Lewis Lavoie. So much, more work that seemed, to me at least, at first.
Here’s a link, so you see the monumental size of it:
    http://www.esquizopedia.com/2008/01/13/%c2%bfque-ves-en-esta-obra-de-arte/

It’s in spanish, but it’s obvious that the picture speaks more than one language.

  51. Billy January 14, 2008 6:42 pm

To add to what Carlos Wrote, this mural was painted live for the United Nations, here’s a link to the artist’s website on this mural:
    http://www.muralmosaic.com/adam.html

I just wish this could be read by the first ones to comment on you post with such hate. Specially Jim and Avatar. (Read their comments on top)
