How to Support Linux

I want to make it clear from the beginning of the post: I am not one of those Linux/M$/Apple fanboys, who is trying to promote by any means one or another OS.

I have used Linux in the past, for short periods of time and it provided a better experience than Windows XP. That’s why I support Linux and the whole philosophy behind it, even though I’m not currently using a *nix distro. For certain reasons, I am currently stuck on Windows. However, I plan to switch to Linux somewhere in the near future.

Nuff said. Now on to the topic:

I know that Linux distros have lots of supporters out there on the internet, who either want to be “trendy”, “cool”, whatever and they are anti-Windows, or they truly believe in open-source, free software and other similar concepts.

Also, it is true that some of these supporters don’t know how to show their support, besides ranting on forums about how evil M$ is.
Anyway, I’ve compiled below a list of ways to show your support to certain Linux distros or Linux concept in general.

If you are a programmer and/or have some technical skills, you can help the development of:

Most-known distributions

Less-known distributions

Obviously, this is by far an exhaustive list of Linux distributions. If you can’t find any OS’s that you know in this list (…), check this one on Wikipedia

Also, please note that some of distributions have listed on their “Get involved” page, other ways of helping out, rather than effectively contributing to the OS’s development. For example, you could write and/or translate the documentation for the OS, or just test it and report bugs.

Besides using a Linux distribution, you can show your support by using free applications instead of commercial ones. Usually, you can find one or more alternatives for every application you use daily on Windows, which in some cases, are even better than their commercial counterparts. Basically, you get for free, something you would normally pay for.
Anyway, here are some websites which list application alternatives and help you switch from Windows to Linux and from one app to another.

Now, what are you waiting for? Go and show some Linux-love!

There are also a few other ways to support linux/distros.

    1. Report bugs with the version you’re using (even if it’s stable).
    2. Offer to help with web work or coding if you know any.
    3. Run testing versions of the distro/packages and report bugs.
    4. Offer constructive advice/suggestions to the developers when they ask for it.
    5. Help other users of the community on IRC and the forums with their support problems where you can.

“Obviously, this is by far an exhaustive list of Linux distributions.”

I think you’re missing the word “not” in there somewhere.
